Bottom line:
- OA and Net 30 mean goods leave before the money arrives. Trade Assurance means the buyer pays into platform protection first, then funds are released on the order steps. The two sentences run opposite ways. Opening Trade Assurance is not a credit line.
- Alibaba.com Payment Terms (30/60 days) is a buyer-side product. Help Centre copy says only invited buyers can apply today; they also need two years of registration, at least US$20,000 spent on Alibaba.com in the last 12 months, and a good payment record. The seller cannot click it on for them.
- A private promise of credit, in chat or on a separate PI, is not mediated as unpaid goods under Trade Assurance. There is no site-wide official credit term. Bills of lading, release and the receiving account still follow the company account.
The finance chat that says “the German customer wants OA 30, we have Trade Assurance, it should be fine,” and the sales reply “the platform has payment terms now,” are not the same form. The floor has already cut material. If you cannot say whose pocket the money is in, it is too late once the container is gone.
How a Hong Kong company chooses Trade Assurance, a wire or a letter of credit is on how you get paid. How the first bulk order should read is on the first Trade Assurance shipment. Money taken before that order exists is on deposit before Trade Assurance. The cash gets stuck on one sentence of credit: who pays first, what the platform covers, and whose pocket the money is in.
1. Do not fold three sentences into “we can do terms”
When a buyer says OA, finance is usually looking at three files. The names sit in one family. The cash does not move the same way.
| What they say | When the money reaches you | What this platform layer covers |
|---|---|---|
| Trade Assurance | The buyer pays into protection first; you are paid on the order steps | Mediation against the terms on that order; see Trade Assurance |
| Platform Payment Terms 30/60 | An eligible buyer takes the goods, then pays on the platform term | Buyer Help: invite-only today; the seller cannot open it |
| Private OA / Net 30 / pay after arrival | You wait for their wire after the goods leave | If it never entered on-site payment, mediation does not cover the debt |
Answering “we have Trade Assurance” as “we can do terms” leaves you peeling a release date from a proforma with no incoming payment. Follow the Rules Centre and this order page. Do not copy a forum’s “15-day window” or “the platform advances 80%” into the contract.
2. Trade Assurance watches money already paid in. It does not advance a credit sale
The public page says: the order is agreed on Alibaba.com, payment goes through platform protection, and problems are mediated on the terms. The buyer pays by card, wallet or on-site wire into protection. You apply for release on shipment, receipt, or the step written on the order. If the money is not in protection, there is no layer that “pays you first and collects from the buyer later.”
So “we will use Trade Assurance, OA 30 days” is two sentences. They want to keep one: either they pay into Trade Assurance and you ship on the steps, or they want the goods first. If both stay, the payment field is empty and finance cannot reconcile.
A Trade Assurance order can split payment: a deposit into protection, then the balance before shipment or against a B/L copy. That is still them paying first. If you write “wire to the Hong Kong account 30 days after the warehouse,” protection may cover only what has already been paid in. The rest is a debt between you and them, not a Trade Assurance release.
How a dispute is evidenced is on chargebacks and disputes. Who holds the bill of lading is on original / telex / sea waybill. Credit shipments lose title first, then notice the money never arrived.
3. Platform payment terms are invite-only. Sales cannot switch them on
Alibaba.com Buyer Help on Payment Terms says only invited buyers can apply for 30/60-day terms today. After login they go to My Alibaba → Trade Services → Payment Terms. If Apply now can be clicked, they are on the current list. If it cannot, they are not eligible today.
The same page lists conditions before they apply: the company is registered in a listed country or region, legally registered for at least two years, a good payment record, and at least US$20,000 spent on Alibaba.com in the last 12 months. If they are not approved, Help says the service may not be available now, that buyers are reassessed, and that they should build purchase history with another method. Lists and thresholds follow Help that day. Do not turn this paragraph into a permanent eligibility table.
Those conditions sit on the buyer. A Verified mark, a star rating or “we are an old shop” will not click Apply for them. If they have no invite and not enough on-site spend, an OA you accept is your own credit sale, not the platform product.
Whether a seller backend shows an “open-account zone” follows your My Alibaba that day. If there is no entry, do not write “we have platform OA” in the inquiry. If there is an entry, still check whether this order can select Payment Terms. Do not assume every country and every amount can.
4. On a private OA, finance asks four things first
Some UK and German purchasing policies are Net 30. Paying into Trade Assurance first will not pass their internal approval. You can talk. Treat it as credit, not as “the platform will catch it.” Before finance speaks, the table needs written answers to four sentences:
- When the clock starts. Invoice date, on-board date, arrival, signed receipt — the gap is a whole ocean voyage. Do not write “we’ll count when it arrives” on the order.
- The cap. This shipment, and this buyer in total. Without a cap, the next order leaves on the same sentence.
- Title. Who holds the original B/L, whether telex release is allowed, whether a sea waybill releases on arrival. A telex release before the term ends is delivery first.
- What happens if it is not paid. The on-site order, export credit insurance, a lawyer’s letter — each covers its own file. Without a policy, do not write “we are insured.” Premiums and payouts sit in the insurer’s contract, not in an Alibaba.com price list.
First orders, custom work and moulds should not start on OA. Money taken before Trade Assurance exists is on the deposit page. Samples are a separate path on how to write samples. If the buyer wants exclusivity and credit in the same mail, stop. Do not answer both with “yes.”
The receiving account is still the Hong Kong company account, the same one bound to Trade Assurance. A personal card or “a friend who can collect” will be questioned by the bank and the platform. Membership fees still go to ALIBABA.COM HONG KONG LIMITED. That is a different invoice from the goods.
5. The inquiry already promised terms. Where the floor stops
The cut ticket has gone out and the payment field is empty. Stop the cut. Open the order: is there a payment into Trade Assurance, or only a Net 30 sentence? If nothing has arrived, do not book the container on a “first Trade Assurance” rhythm.
The forwarder wants a telex release and the buyer says they cannot pay until the term ends. Release and collection are two acts. A telex release before the money arrives gives title away. Write how the original B/L is released before the vessel leaves. Do not change it at the terminal.
On WhatsApp they say “ship first, we pay on the 25th.” Paste that sentence back onto the on-site order message. A company pay day is not platform Payment Terms. Without an on-site record, a dispute is only a chat screenshot.
Sales already replied “we have credit insurance, OA is fine.” Open the policy: is the insured this Hong Kong company, is the buyer named, does this amount sit inside the limit, and must the shipment be declared before it leaves? If the policy does not match, take the sentence back the same day. Do not invent a limit.
6. How to answer the inquiry
| What they ask | A reply that holds | Do not reply |
|---|---|---|
| We need OA 30, you have Trade Assurance. | Trade Assurance is you paying into platform protection first, then we ship on the order steps. OA is goods first. Please put one of those sentences on this order. The first order is Trade Assurance or paid before shipment. | Trade Assurance means we can do terms. The platform will advance if something goes wrong. |
| Open 60-day payment terms on your side. | Platform Payment Terms are applied for by eligible buyers in My Alibaba. It is invite-only today. Please log in and see if you can click Apply. We cannot open it for you. | We’ll switch on 60 days in our backend. |
| Net 30 after arrival, we are a large company. | Please send the legal name, when the clock starts, a cap, and whether this order is on-site payment or a wire. The first shipment will not leave on post-arrival terms. A written limit can be discussed after that. | Large companies are fine. We’ll ship. |
| Put OA on the Trade Assurance order. | We can write payment steps. Amounts not yet paid into protection are not paid to the seller by the platform first. Please say which part pays into Trade Assurance and which part is credit. | Writing it on Trade Assurance means the platform guarantees the credit sale. |
Do not write “OA accepted,” “Net 60 worry-free,” or “Trade Assurance includes credit” on the showcase. You can say you take on-site Trade Assurance and wires before shipment, and that credit depends on this order and the buyer’s eligibility. Do not lock rates, advances or insurance payouts as site-wide official prices.
7. You already said “we can do terms”
- Tell sales the same day: that sentence does not stand. Do not cut or book as if the goods leave first.
- Open the inquiry or the Trade Assurance order. Read the method, the steps, and whether anything has been paid into protection.
- Ask the buyer: platform Payment Terms, or a private wire on credit; when the clock starts; the amount; how title is released.
- If they apply for platform terms: they log in themselves. If Apply will not click, return to Trade Assurance first or paid before shipment.
- If you already promised a private OA: add a written cap and start date, and keep the receiving account on the Hong Kong company. Do not collect in a personal account.
- If the goods are already on the water and the money is not in: do not telex-release while you still hold the B/L. Stay on the order page. Do not change the receiving account to chase.
The membership fee still only buys the file and the showcases. Wire it to ALIBABA.COM HONG KONG LIMITED. Corpable does not open payment terms and does not collect the goods payment. Whether the platform approves Payment Terms, and whether the buyer pays, follows the order page and the bank credit.
Questions teams actually ask
If we use Trade Assurance, can we give the buyer OA 30?
No. Trade Assurance is the buyer paying into platform protection first, then release on the order steps. OA is goods first, money later. The cash flows opposite ways. “We have Trade Assurance” in chat is not a credit line.
The buyer says the platform has 30/60-day terms. Can we switch it on?
Buyer Help says only invited buyers can apply for Payment Terms today. They must be able to click Apply under My Alibaba → Trade Services → Payment Terms. They also need at least two years of legal registration, at least US$20,000 spent on Alibaba.com in the last 12 months, and a good payment record. The seller cannot open it for them.
If a repeat buyer insists on credit and we write it on the Trade Assurance order, will the platform advance the money?
Trade Assurance follows the payment steps on that order. Writing “pay 30 days after arrival” does not make the platform pay you first. A private wire or a personal account is even further from mediation. Follow that day’s order page and the Rules Centre.
Is a 30% deposit required before OA?
There is no site-wide official credit split, and no official rule that OA needs a 30% deposit. Money taken before a Trade Assurance order exists is on the deposit page. Write the split on this order. Do not copy a forwarded post.
May the showcase say “OA / Net 60 / credit insurance covered”?
Not without a matching platform Payment Terms status or a written policy. Limits and premiums sit in the insurer’s contract that day, not in an Alibaba.com price list. “Covered” will be screenshotted when they want goods.
Can Corpable open platform payment terms or guarantee this OA will be paid?
No. An advisor can sit with you on the payment steps and the reply. We do not apply for Payment Terms, buy credit insurance, or guarantee collection. Membership fees still wire to ALIBABA.COM HONG KONG LIMITED.
