Bottom line:
- An LC or L/C at sight is a conditional payment by the issuing bank. Trade Assurance is funds arriving in platform protection first, then released on order nodes. Two papers. Having Trade Assurance does not mean you can take this credit.
- Soft clauses often read: inspection signed by the applicant, an import licence “to follow,” a presentation or shipment date you cannot meet. Documents that do not match on their face let the bank refuse. Trade Assurance mediation will not cover that box.
- Opening a Hong Kong store does not examine the credit. Bank charges follow that LC and the bank quote. There is no site-wide official price. A private account, or a first wire “so we can open the LC,” stops first.
Finance writes: “The German buyer wants an LC; we have Trade Assurance, so it should be fine.” Sales replies that an LC is a bank guarantee. The shop floor has already bought material. The credit has not arrived. When it does, one line reads “inspection certificate issued by applicant.”
How US-dollar receipts sit among Trade Assurance, a wire and an LC is on getting paid. Goods first, money later, is on OA. A mould deposit before the Trade Assurance order is on deposits. This page only splits the LC box: what a soft clause looks like, who examines, and how it stays apart from Trade Assurance.
1. Do not fold three sentences into “a bank means we are safe”
| What they say | When the money reaches you | Who is examining what |
|---|---|---|
| Trade Assurance | The buyer pays into platform protection first; funds release on order nodes | The platform mediates on that order’s terms |
| Sight LC / L/C at sight | After a complying presentation, the issuing bank pays under the credit | The bank examines documents on their face, not the goods |
| Soft-clause LC | Often waits on a document or licence the buyer issues | The applicant can stall payment; the bank can still refuse on a discrepancy |
| OA / Net 30 | Goods leave first; money arrives later | Platform payment terms are another page: OA |
ICC UCP 600 governs how documentary credits are examined. Trade Assurance rules govern the platform order. One PO can write both “Trade Assurance” and “LC.” In execution you still pick one main path. Do not let two document sets write two different stories.
2. A soft clause is visible the day the credit arrives
These lines do not need a salesperson to translate them as “a bit awkward”:
- Inspection or acceptance must be issued by the applicant or a person the applicant names.
- Shipment waits on the applicant’s written notice, or an import licence “to follow.”
- Presentation, shipment and expiry sit on top of each other; your shop-floor lead time cannot meet them.
- Copy documents go to the applicant first; originals go to the bank later, so the set can be swapped.
- The issuing bank sits somewhere the buyer does not know, or you are asked to wire a “margin” to a private account.
If you see them, do not start production. The reply is: change to a neutral third-party inspection, the licence must exist when the credit is issued, dates must match what the shop floor can do, originals go straight to the bank. If they will not amend, treat the credit as not opened.
Sight, usance, confirmed, transferable — the names are easy. The cash does not arrive at the same moment. Confirmation is another bank adding its undertaking; who pays that charge must sit on the credit. There is no site-wide official price. Ask the advising bank.
3. Trade Assurance will not cover a discrepancy
An LC refusal is written on the bank’s discrepancy list: spelling, piece count, bill-of-lading date, insurance wording. The goods can already be on the water; the bank can still refuse. Opening a Trade Assurance order on the same cargo does not help: the platform examines the order page, not this credit.
The other way around: a Trade Assurance dispute follows order nodes and evidence. Having “already presented LC documents” does not win it. Two files, two paths. An amendment agreed on WhatsApp must be written back onto the site. That is the offline-chat page.
The Hong Kong company’s corporate account, the bill-of-lading Shipper and the invoice name still have to match. If the LC beneficiary is a private person or a mainland factory, the money will not reach the Hong Kong books, and the auditor will not match it.
4. How the inquiry can be answered
| They write | A usable reply | Do not write |
|---|---|---|
| We pay by LC, you have Trade Assurance so OK. | Trade Assurance and an LC are two papers. Please open the credit with our Hong Kong company as beneficiary. We confirm lead time after we examine the terms. Soft clauses (applicant-signed inspection, a licence not yet provided) must be amended. | We have Trade Assurance; open any LC you like. |
| Inspection cert must be signed by us. | Acceptance issued only by the buyer stalls payment. Please change it to an agreed third party, or take inspection off the LC documents. | We will produce first and amend when the credit arrives. |
| Wire 30% to my manager so we can open LC. | An LC margin does not go to a private account. Issuing bank, advising bank and beneficiary follow corporate accounts. | Wire a first amount to show good faith. |
| The discrepancy is small; the bank will pay. | The bank examines the face. A discrepancy needs the applicant’s waiver or an amendment. We follow the advising bank’s list, not a chat promise. | A small difference will be overlooked. |
Do not write “we accept all LCs” or “the bank has guaranteed the payment” on a showcase. You can say a sight LC can be discussed, the beneficiary is the Hong Kong company, and terms must be examined before production starts.
5. The credit has arrived and the soft clause is still there
- Do not start production that day. Do not book space.
- Mark every soft clause, ask the buyer to amend, and leave one line on the site.
- Do not merge Trade Assurance, a wire and an LC onto one remittance slip. Membership still goes to Alibaba Hong Kong.
- Beneficiary, Shipper and invoice name must match the Hong Kong company. If they do not, amend first.
- Anyone who offers to present for you, wants the master account, or promises “it will definitely negotiate”: stop. Presentation goes through your advising bank.
The membership still buys the file and the showcases. Wire it to ALIBABA.COM HONG KONG LIMITED. Corpable does not examine credits, present documents or pay bank charges. Whether the issuing bank pays follows that credit and the bank that day. Do not write a penalty or a rate into the showcase.
Questions teams actually ask
If we have Trade Assurance, can we take a letter of credit?
Not automatically. Trade Assurance is the buyer putting funds into platform protection. An LC is a conditional payment undertaking by the issuing bank. Two sets of documents, two releases. A chat line that says “we have Trade Assurance” does not examine the credit.
What is a soft clause, and why is it dangerous?
Payment is controlled by the applicant or a third party: an inspection certificate signed by the buyer, an import licence not yet in hand, a shipment or presentation period you cannot meet. A discrepancy lets the bank refuse. That is the credit, not a platform rule.
Is an LC safer than a wire?
A sight credit with terms you can meet, and documents you can present, often sits on bank credit rather than a private wire. Terms the buyer controls, or a request to wire a private account “so we can open the LC,” are not safer. Confirmation, negotiation and discrepancies follow that credit and the bank. Do not copy a forwarded post.
Will the bank overlook a small discrepancy?
The bank examines documents on their face, not the goods. A discrepancy needs the applicant’s waiver or an amendment. Terms on a Trade Assurance order page do not cover the LC box.
May the showcase say “we accept LCs / covered by Sinosure”?
Not without matching examination capacity and a written policy. Issuing, advising, negotiation and confirmation charges follow the bank that day. They are not an Alibaba.com official fee.
Can Corpable examine the credit, or guarantee this LC will negotiate?
No. An advisor can sit with you on the payment path and how to answer a soft clause. We do not present documents to a bank, buy credit insurance, or promise negotiation. Membership fees still wire to ALIBABA.COM HONG KONG LIMITED.
