The Indian buyer wants BIS / CRS: CE and UL will not fill compulsory registration

When an Indian buyer asks for BIS, notified electronics take compulsory registration (CRS). The manufacturer applies with a BIS-recognised lab report. A foreign applicant without an Indian office needs an AIR. CE, UL and FCC will not fill that box.

The inquiry says: “Need BIS certificate / CRS registration.” Sales staples a CE, a UL and a note that says “saleable in India.” The buyer replies that the registration number will not match. The shop floor asks whether to buy another BIS paper or print a mark on the carton.

EU conformity sits on CE. US workplace marks sit on UL. Korean safety sits on KC. This page only splits Indian compulsory registration.

1. The paper they want is a registration number

Notified electronics and IT goods take the BIS registration scheme. The application needs an original test report from a lab recognised by BIS under CRS. A foreign applicant with no Indian liaison or branch office must nominate an AIR. A supplier’s own test report is not enough, MeitY FAQs say.

First ask whether this model is on the Order. Bare mechanical hardware often means the buyer’s own policy. Retitling an adaptor registration for a luminaire will be asked to match the standard.

2. Registration is for this manufacturer and model, not “our factory passed”

Registration sits on the applicant manufacturer and the models granted. New models can be included under the same number through the official path. A supplier’s “whole factory BIS” will not cover a new power rating or a new contract plant.

3. CE and UL will not fill this box

CE, UL and FCC each answer their own law. The Order wants registration and the Standard Mark under Indian standards. A technical file can be preparation. If it will not log, it is not there.

Open this Indian order: is it on the Order, who is the manufacturer, and is there an AIR.
Keep CE, UL and FCC as their own papers.
Match the model and the lot. Do not hand the master account to an intermediary to “make a certificate.”
If the goods are already moving: send the matching number. Do not invent one.

If we have CE / UL / FCC, can the goods enter India?

Can a foreign plant apply without an Indian company?
